What is an immigration psychological evaluation and what the report includes

Portalis Team · July 11, 2026

An immigration psychological evaluation is a clinical interview conducted by a licensed psychologist that results in a written report. The report describes the person's emotional condition, relevant history and professional conclusions, in a format that can be attached to an immigration file.

Who performs it

A licensed psychologist. At Portalis interviews happen online, in Spanish, and the report is signed by the same professional who ran the evaluation. It is a clinical assessment, not an automated test or an administrative step.

What the interview looks like

Usually one or two video sessions. The clinician explores the reason for the evaluation, personal and family history, the context behind the immigration process and the current emotional impact. Standardized clinical instruments may be used when the case calls for them.

What the report contains

  • Identification of the person evaluated and of the clinician, including license number.
  • Reason for the evaluation.
  • History as reported by the person.
  • Results of any instruments used.
  • Clinical analysis and conclusion.
  • Recommendations and the clinician's signature.

What it is not

The report does not decide the outcome of a case and does not replace legal advice. It is a clinical document describing what the professional observed and concluded. Case strategy belongs to the attorney or legal representative.

Turnaround

It depends on how many sessions are needed and on the complexity of the case. After the final session the clinician writes and signs the report, delivered as a PDF ready to file.
