Psychological evaluation for asylum: what the clinician assesses

Portalis Team · July 19, 2026

In an asylum case, the psychological evaluation describes the emotional impact of the experiences the person reports. The report neither confirms nor disputes facts: it documents what the clinician observes and concludes within their discipline.

What the clinician looks at

The focus is the coherence of the emotional account, symptoms consistent with post-traumatic stress, anxiety or depression, day-to-day functioning and current risk factors. The person's resources are also recorded: support network, coping capacity and stability.

Clinical instruments

When appropriate, standardized instruments commonly used in clinical practice for trauma and mood symptoms are applied. Results are read in context: a score alone is not a conclusion.

Interviews about difficult experiences

The clinician works within a careful frame: sensitive topics are flagged in advance, the session can pause, and the evaluation can be split across more than one meeting. The goal is clinical information without re-traumatizing.

How the report is used

The signed PDF is delivered so the person or their legal representative can add it to the file. Legal strategy belongs to the attorney; the clinician contributes the clinical perspective.

Confidentiality

Everything discussed is protected by professional confidentiality. The report goes to the person evaluated, who decides with whom to share it.
